NTEE Version 2
The same codes the IRS assigns, rewritten in a three-part form that separates industry, activity and organization type. This is how NTEE appears in NCCS data files.
Industry group
One of 12 broad sectors, built from the major-group letter. Universities and hospitals are split out from education and health.
Activity
The original IRS code. Codes whose last two digits are 01 to 19 describe a support role, not an activity, so they become x00 and the role moves to the third part.
Organization type
RG is a regular nonprofit doing the activity itself. The other seven types are support roles: advocacy, fundraising, research, professional associations and so on.
B01 means "advocacy for education", and B0129 (an older five-character NCCS form) meant "advocacy for charter schools". The support role was hidden in the digits, so grouping all advocacy groups, or all charter-school organizations, took special handling. Version 2 makes both explicit: EDU-B00-AA and EDU-B29-AA.
